Warplanes: Super Helmet for Eurofighter

Archives

June 7, 2006: The Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft pilots are getting a new "look and shoot" pilot helmet. This is the third generation of these helmets, which use three or more sensors in the cockpit to track small lights on the helmet, so that the aircraft targeting systems always knows where the pilot is looking. This latest version of the helmet incorporates a head-up display, night vision gear and the ability of the pilot to activate weapons, sensors or simply pointers (for a wingman) by simply turning his head. These helmets have gotten lighter and easier to wear over the years, and have made air combat a more intuitive process.
