The second (and only remaining) prototype of the Ukrainian An-70 transport crashed on take-off at Omsk on 27 Jan. The first prototype crashed in February 1995; seven crewmen died. Two of the engines failed on take-off, causing the aircraft to make a forced landing at the end of the runway. No one was killed, but four were injured. The An-70 is still expected to enter series production next year for both Russia and Ukraine.--Stephen V Cole
