25 July, 1999; THE CIA is receiving 15% more applications for jobs as spies and analysts than it has in recent years, indicating that it may again be "cool" to be a spy. CIA Director Tenet, who has led the CIA's basketball team to victory and often has lunch with low-level employees in the cafeteria, is said to have restored the agency's sagging morale. A recent program (based on the Army Reserve) to lure retired and former spies back into service for specific missions has restored lost "cultural knowledge" and improved coverage of some key areas. --Steven V Cole.
