Organizations that help service members apply for conscientious objector status report that the number of phone calls they receive has increased by 400%, from 2,000 a month to 10,000 a month. The military, however, reports no increase in actual applications. The situation seems to be that tens of thousands of young people were recruited into the military with promises of money for college and now find themselves in uniform during a shooting war.--Stephen V Cole
