In the first satellite launch from Alaska, four satellites were carried into orbit on 29 September on an Athena I booster. The Kodiak Launch Complex fires missiles due south for polar orbits. While a primarily commercial venture, some experience is being gained from Kodiak launches that will be useful when anti-missile interceptors are also launched from Alaska.--Stephen V Cole
