Pakistan has 75,000 troops manning 700 observation posts and crossing points on the Afghan border. In the last seven months, these troops have suffered 202 casualties during hostile encounters with smugglers, Islamic radicals and bandits. Another 7,000 Pakistani troops, in the same period, fought 42 battles with hostile tribesmen and foreign terrorists. The army suffered 467 casualties, but killed 302 tribesmen and foreigners, and arrested several hundred more.
