 For the last seven years, the Iranian intelligence service unofficially maintained three offices in Kurdish controlled northern Iraq. The Kurds and the US went along with this as a means of  maintaining contact with the Iranians. These offices have now been closed and the Iranian intelligence officials sent back to Iran.
