The war against illegal drugs continues. In the last two months, 20,000 members of drug smuggling and distribution gangs were arrested, along with 41,000 addicts. Some 50 tons of drugs (opium and heroin) were seized and 58 drug gangsters were executed. Drug use continues to be a growing problem. Illegal drugs from Afghanistan get to major markets in the Persian Gulf and Europe by moving through Iran.
