The war in the countryside has turned more brutal and rebels and army troops force poor farmers to choose sides. Many of the rural poor are all for any change that would improve their economic condition. But the radicalism and brutality of the rebels puts them off. While the army represents the still respected monarchy (tradition is still a big thing in the conservative countryside), it also represents random violence and arbitrary force.
