Fighting between Christian and Moslem villagers in northern Bauchi state has left several dead. The cause was the imposition of Islamic Sharia law. Off the coast, 99 oil workers were released by armed locals. The hostage takers increasingly run an extortion scheme whereby they take oil workers hostage until the oil companies give them jobs or money.
