Burundian officials said that the Maramvya "relocation camp" was being dismantled. It is the first of 11 camps to be dismantled. Approximately 2000 people were living at the Maramvya camp. NGOs estimate that 330,000 Burundians are in the 50 relocation camps set up by the government in an attempt to isolate Hutu rebels Conditions in the camps have been described as ranging from "deplorable" to "wretched." International political pressure caused the Burundian government to close the camps.
