On September 20 two Burundian government soldiers were killed when rebels attacked their position near Carama in the Rubirizi hills outside Bujumbura. On September 22 the Burundian government claimed its troops had killed twenty rebels in the town of Giharo (Rutana Province) and 50 in Kayogoro (Makamba) province in two weeks of operations along the Tanzanian border. On September 23 "several dozen rebels" (all in uniforms, according to reports) attacked Mutakura (northern outskirts of Bujumbura). Allegedly, 11 civilians were killed in the attack. On September 27 western journalists reported that Hutu rebels killed thirteen Burundian Army soldiers in an ambush north of Bujumbura (Tenga-Kivova area). According to a Burundian Army source, one of the soldiers killed was Colonel Audace Basuzuguye, commander of the Muha military camp near Bujumbura. The Tenga-Kivoga area is thick with coffee plantations and jungle. It is a major staging area for the FNL (National Liberation Forces) Hutu guerrilla group.
